Volunteer Audio Skills Research 2026

Inovaplus Ltd is conducting research, commissioned by the Association of Worship & Venue Technicians CIC (AWVT), into how volunteers who operate sound and other technical equipment in churches, theatres, community venues, music groups and other amateur technical settings acquire their skills and develop their abilities.

We want to understand what volunteers are currently expected to do, how they learn, how organisations decide when they are ready to work independently, what difficulties they experience, and whether existing opportunities for learning and development meet their needs.

You do not need to be technically qualified or understand specialist audio terminology to complete this questionnaire. Your experience of what happens in your organisation is valuable to the research.

How will the research be used?
The findings will be used to identify gaps in the way volunteer audio technicians currently learn and develop their skills, and to inform the development of an accessible, structured progression framework for volunteer audio technicians. The research will also help AWVT identify where further curriculum development, learning resources and partnerships may be needed.

The questionnaire should take approximately 8–10 minutes.
